Sakleshpur and the Western Ghats

A landscape shaped by rain. A life shaped by place.

To understand an Acres estate, start with the mountains it sits in.

01 — Mountains and monsoon

An old range that makes the rain

The Western Ghats run for about 1,600 km parallel to India's western coast, broken only by the 30 km Palghat Gap. UNESCO describes the range as older than the Himalayas.

Every year the mountains intercept the south-west monsoon winds, and their forests influence the Indian monsoon itself. UNESCO cites the Ghats as one of the best examples of the tropical monsoon system on the planet.

02 — Canopy and cultivation

Coffee grows beneath the trees

UNESCO counts the Western Ghats among the world's eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity. At least 325 globally threatened species are recorded there, and about 54% of its roughly 650 tree species are found nowhere else.

The Coffee Board of India notes that India grows all of its coffee under shade, in a two-tier canopy of mixed trees, with crops such as pepper and cardamom often growing alongside.

03 — People and estate life

Knowledge that lives on the land

Estate life follows the agricultural year: planting, pruning, managing the shade, harvesting. It depends on the skill and experience of the people who work the land, often over generations.

While the world visits, you belong.

We'll add specific stories about the region and our teams here once they're documented and approved.

04 — Responsibility for the land

Ownership comes with a duty of care

UNESCO notes that about 40% of the inscribed World Heritage property lies outside the formal protected-area system. Much of this landscape's future therefore depends on how private and community land is cared for.

Acres estates are privately owned, managed farmland. We don't present any Acres estate as part of a World Heritage component, a protected forest or a wildlife corridor. Any such claim would need site-specific evidence first.
