Why Chikmagalur is called Karnataka’s original coffee country
Chikmagalur is the birthplace of coffee in India. Around 1670, the Sufi saint Baba Budan carried seven coffee beans home from Mocha in Yemen and planted them in these hills, starting the coffee cultivation that later spread across southern India.
He is said to have carried exactly seven beans, because seven is a sacred number in Islam and green coffee could not be taken freely out of Arabia. The hills where he planted them, the Chandragiri range, were later renamed Baba Budan Giri in his honour. Chikmagalur has grown shade-grown arabica ever since, which is why the district is known as the Coffee Land of Karnataka.

Chikmagalur sits in Karnataka’s Malnad hill region, in the Western Ghats, around 245 to 250 km by road from Bengaluru. It is home to Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka at 1,925 metres, and carries roughly 30 percent forest cover.
